Another role of Skype is to provide a "working and easy to use end-to-end
cross-platform audio and video client". Everybody can use Skype. My mom
can, and does.
Typical SIP-based stuff can be *made* to work. If you know all the options
to set, the server name to connect to, etc. - and then it might not have
Video when talking to a Mac user, etc. (which is not a shortcoming of the
protocol, but implementations seem to lag behind).
