Recently we've got a transit session with AS174 for IPv6, and i found out this strange thingie:

traceroute to cogentco.com (2001:550:1::cc01) from 2001:b18:0:2:230:48ff:fed2:c50f, port 33434, from port 61752, 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
 1  2001:b18:0:2::ffff (2001:b18:0:2::ffff)  0.201 ms  0.124 ms  0.129 ms
 2  2001:978:2:32::1:1 (2001:978:2:32::1:1)  0.326 ms  0.273 ms  0.325 ms
 3  te1-2.ccr01.cbp01.atlas.cogentco.com (::ffff:130.117.49.178)  118.790 ms  117.157 ms  127.338 ms
 4  te0-0-0-3.ccr22.mad05.atlas.cogentco.com (::ffff:154.54.36.142)  117.189 ms  117.605 ms  117.436 ms
 5  te0-1-0-1.mpd22.par01.atlas.cogentco.com (::ffff:130.117.49.97)  109.776 ms  109.923 ms  109.871 ms
 6  ::ffff:154.54.46.105 (::ffff:154.54.46.105)  115.825 ms  115.700 ms  115.643 ms
 7  te0-3-0-6.mpd22.dca01.atlas.cogentco.com (::ffff:154.54.41.29)  110.893 ms  110.869 ms  110.925 ms
 8  2001:550:1::1 (2001:550:1::1)  118.937 ms  118.586 ms  118.602 ms
 9  cogentco.com (2001:550:1::cc01)  117.184 ms  117.272 ms  117.214 ms

and, in ipv4... (ok, they have a server in germany..., but you can see the 3rd hop is similar (in ipv4)

traceroute to www.cogentco.com (38.100.128.10), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

the question is, where is the ipv6 backbone ?

what are the pros and cons of doing it this way ?

regards,
